| GEORGIA RED is a
Valencia- type variety being considered by NASA for space
studies, and was jointly released by the Georgia
Agricultural Experiment Stations and USDA-ARS in 1986.
Georgia Red is an excellent choice for the fresh-market
boiling trade in the Southeast because of its high yield
performance, large fruit size, and compact bunch
growth habit. In Georgia Peanut |
Variety Tests,
the seven-year (1996-2002) average performance shows
Georgia Red to have higher yields, grades, and dollar
values compared to New Mexico Valencia C, New Mexico
Valencia A, and Valencia McRan. Georgia Red also has
better disease tolerance, with similar early maturity as
these other three commercial Valencia varieties. |
Georgia
Red was developed by Dr. William D. Branch at
the University of Georgias Coastal Plain Experiment
Station in Tifton GA. It is a protected peanut variety
that can only be sold as a class of certified seed and
only by individuals licensed by the Georgia Seed
Development Commission (GSDC) under guidelines
established in conjunction with the University of Georgia
Research Foundation (UGARF). |
